We are now 501c3

We are pleased and excited to announce that St.Melangell's Small Mammal Sanctuary is officially a 501c3 !

How can you help? You can now donate a tax deductible gift to St Mel's. No amount is too small here at St. Mels.  You can help even if you have no cash!

Other ways you can help US if local ( Or help a local to you wildlife facility ) is to :

1.) Share our Facebook Page to all the animal lovers you know :)

2.) Educate your friends on what to do if you find an orphaned or injured animal. Or help them find rehabbers in your area. In Ohio

3.) Have any clean-ish cages or aquariums laying around in the basement or garage? Rehabbers might be in need of more caging ! Donate it and make space for more animals to be helped.

4.) Find out if your local wildlife facility is signed up for Kroger Rewards

5.) Want a more hands on approach but don't have time for constant feedings ? As if you can be a transport volunteer ! Often we get calls from people who are not able to drive for what ever reason or are some distance away. Sometimes we can't leave the animals that are already in our facility for very long. All you have to do is pick the animal up and drive the animal to us ! ( This can apply as service hours )

There are many ways to help wildlife and the wildlife rehabbers.

Found an animal?

If you have found an animal, please CALL before you do anything. Often times what your seeing is normal.

If you already have an orphaned or injured wild animal put it in a small , secure container and place it in a warm dark area, away from children or pets. Please do not give any food or water and CALL US immediately.

Wildlife can carry parasites and diseases that could potentially put you or your pets in danger. Before attempting to help please CALL us.

Or goal is to help wildlife and provide ethical and quality care and treatment with the aim being future release back into the native habitat.  The faster we can get a true orphan or an injured animal, the better the animals survival and release rate is.

We know its a unique and rare experience to find and help an animal, but please consider their medical needs and call US or your nearest rehab facitlity as soon as possible.

We know you want what is best for the animal or you would not be trying to find it help.

YOU are the first rescuer!

Thank You,
Stephanie

Who is St Melangell ?

My daughter Fianna introduced me to St Mellangell. I have always had a fascination with St Francis of Assisi . Not just his encounters with animals and God's creation , but his love for people and God.
My daughter had a knack for reading about obsure saints. And one day this introduced us both to St Melengell.

When I was a child ( in the days of looser laws) I was a rehabilitator with the Cincinnati Zoo's raise and release program.  The love for raising and releasing stuck with me even though my life led me away from it, or so it seemed. It seemed animals in need  still found their way to my door. As explained in another post, I found myself back in the rehab world.

St Melangell is the patron saint of hares, rabbits and small mammals. So I choose to name my small mammal facility after her. Many times I have prayed for an animal. For its wounds to mend. For a medication to kick in. For guidance on if euthanasia is needed.  I hope she prays with me, petitioning our Creator.
